The Pittsburgh Penguins announced their first big wave of roster cuts on Wednesday.
They assigned defensemen David Breazeale, Tyler Duke, Brent Johnson, Ryan Mast, Maleek McGowan, and Broten Sabo to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. They also placed goaltender Taylor Gauthier on waivers for assignment to the AHL.
Once Gauthier clears waivers, he will be in WBS.
Forward Carter Sanderson was assigned to the WHL's Calgary Hitmen, and defenseman Tomas Galvas was loaned back to Bili Tygri Liberec in Czechia.
These roster cuts come three days after goaltender Matvei Nikonovich was assigned to the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Fellow goaltender Cam Johnson left for personal reasons.
None of these moves should surprise anyone, especially Galvas. He was a step behind during training camp and the pre-season, which isn't a bad thing. He simply has more room to grow as a player and will try to do that in Czechia this year.
Gauthier will get a good chunk of games in WBS this season since he has nothing left to prove in the ECHL.
The Penguins' training camp roster is now at 58 players.
