The Pittsburgh Penguins and many of their top prospects are less than two weeks away from beginning their regular seasons in North America.
On the other side of the globe, the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) is already a month into its campaign, and prospect Mikhail Ilyin is having a pretty solid start with Severstal Cherepovets.
Ilyin, a fifth-round pick (142nd overall) from the 2023 Draft, is tied with Adam Liska for fourth in team scoring with seven points in 10 games. The 19-year-old winger, who shares a birthday with Penguins legend Jaromir Jagr, has yet to score a goal but is contributing with seven assists.
He's currently minus-1, which isn't bad considering that Severstal's overall goal differential is minus-2, 33-31.
Interestingly, Ilyin remains unsigned by the Penguins and is coming off a solid debut season in the KHL, where he recorded four goals and 22 assists for 26 points in 65 games last year.
On pace for 48 assists in 2024-25, Ilyin will be an intriguing prospect to keep tabs on as the season progresses and if he can make his way to the Penguins pipeline in North America when his KHL contract expires.
