The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed Ville Koivunen to a massive contract.
They announced on Thursday that Koivunen has agreed to an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $4 million. Koivunen was the final restricted free agent for the Penguins to sign.
It's a contract that nobody saw coming, especially after finishing the 2025-26 season with only two goals and seven points in 39 games. He also spent time with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, compiling 13 goals and 41 points in 34 games.
He plays super well in the AHL, but hasn't been able to translate that play to the NHL. The Penguins are obviously betting that he will during this deal and that he'll be a big part of their future.
His underlying metrics have been strong, but the production hasn't been there. He'll have an opportunity to change that this season, especially if he makes the team out of training camp.
Koivunen was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes in the Jake Guentzel trade back in 2024. He has compiled two goals and 14 points in 47 NHL games.
