The Pittsburgh Penguins rewarded legendary forward Evgeni Malkin on his 40th birthday with an extension for one of his linemates from this past year.

Forward Tommy Novak was signed to a three-year extension by the Penguins on Friday. The contract has an average annual value of $4.65 million and runs through the 2029-30 season.

Prior to signing the extension, Novak had a year left on his current contract and was slated to be a free agent during the 2027 offseason. 

Novak is a solid player who spent much of last season on the second line with Malkin and Egor Chinakhov. He played in all 82 games, finishing with 16 goals and 42 points. 

He was a good playmaker on that line and also scored some big goals for the Penguins in their run to the playoffs this past season. 

Novak was originally acquired by the Penguins from the Nashville Predators before the 2025 trade deadline. They acquired Novak and defenseman Luke Schenn for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick before flipping Schenn to the Winnipeg Jets shortly after.
