Penguins second-line center Evgeni Malkin placed on injured reserve to make way for another forward to return
On Sunday, Pittsburgh Penguins star forward Evgeni Malkin was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury ahead of the team's tilt against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In a corresponding move, forward Philip Tomasino - who was injured during Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Jan. 3 - was activated from IR.
Head coach Mike Sullivan stressed that Malkin's day-to-day status remains the same and that he continues to progress in his rehab.
"It gives us the opportunity to activate Philip," Sullivan said. "It doesn't change his status at all as day-to-day. It's retroactive."
Malkin has eight goals and 32 points in 41 games on the season and just three goals in his last 25 games.
