Massive questions await the Pittsburgh Penguins as their summer begins.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a second consecutive year, and with that come questions. Free agents, the NHL Draft, and more all sit in front of Kyle Dubas and the Penguins, but three massive questions spearhead what could be another hectic offseason in Pittsburgh.
The Penguins coaching staff is the first and most pressing issue that needs addressed. Mike Sullivan's position is secure thanks to his close relationship with ownership and a shiny new three-year contract that doesn't kick in until next season.
However, missing the playoffs and failing to win a playoff series since 2018 should and will have consequences. That likely comes in the form of assistant coaches Todd Reirden and Mike Vellucci. The Penguins need new voices behind the bench, and Sullivan needs someone new to challenge him.
Another position will be of high interest this summer, general manager. Kyle Dubas assumed that role late last summer following his hire as President of Hockey Ops in June. Dubas was hired late into the front office hiring cycle and had little time to conduct a GM search of his own before the draft last season.
Dubas stated "continuity" as a primary reason for giving himself the role this year. With an entire offseason at his disposal, will the Penguins be in the market for a new general manager?
The biggest on-ice question is the same as it has been for years, goaltending. Tristan Jarry fell victim to the same issues that have plagued his entire career. His inability to perform during the back half of the season is concerning, and he doesn't have the same injury asterisk from last year's discourse around the position.
Alex Nedeljkovic was a nice story down the stretch but leaves much to be desired as a number-one option. His 8-1-3 stretch nearly got the Penguins into the postseason. However, a .898 save percentage and 2.92 goals against average during that stretch aren't enough to warrant Nedeljkovic taking over starting duties next season.
These stories and more will unfold over the next five months as the 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins begin to take shape.
