The time for waiting is over and the Pittsburgh Penguins need help to save their season.
PITTSBURGH – Kyle Dubas is new to his position as president of hockey operations and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the time for waiting is over. The Penguins need a wake-up call after dropping two games in two nights while fighting for their playoff lives.
One could argue the Penguins needed a wake-up call during their four-game losing streak to start December, but Dubas said he still needed time to learn what does and doesn’t work with the team. Dubas wanted to let the games decide what direction to take the team, and they responded well.
An 11-5-4 run heading into the All-Star break led many to believe the Penguins were primed to become buyers at the trade deadline and make a grand push for the playoffs. Dropping two of three after returning has once again put the rest of the season into question.
The Penguins aren’t cooked just yet but need something to give. Some changes need to be made, and they need to be made quickly. Certain former general managers would have hit the phone lines hard after a weekend like this. It’s time for Dubas to have a similar reaction.
There is still time to salvage the season and turn it into something grand, but there must be some noticeable change. Head coach Mike Sullivan has called for players to step up, and that call needs to be heard.
The trade deadline is under a month away, and the Penguins have expressed their patience on multiple occasions. However, sitting seven points out of a playoff spot should force patience to wear thin. The Penguins have games in hand but need the help to take full advantage of the opportunities ahead.
