The Pittsburgh Penguins chase for the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to an end.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially been mathematically eliminated from contention for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Thanks to a win from the Washington Capitals, the Penguins will miss the postseason and play a meaningless final game for the second straight year.
Despite a win over the Nashville Predators in their final home game, the Penguins entered an off day not in control of their playoff destiny. While the Penguins were winning, so too were the Capitals and Detroit Red Wings.
For the Penguins to keep their playoff hopes alive, they needed losses from both the Capitals and Red Wings. The Capitals secured a win over the Philadelphia Flyers and sealed their spot in the playoffs.
The Red Wings tied their game against the Montreal Canadiens with three seconds remaining and eventually won in a shootout.
The Penguins entered the final stretch of the season on a hot streak and were hopeful they still had more meaningful hockey to play. Brutal losses earlier in the year and one of the NHL’s worst power plays ultimately sank the Penguins' 2023-24 season.
Their improbable push for the postseason may have ended, but the Penguins still have one more game to play before the offseason arrives. The Penguins will play a useless Game 82 against the New York Islanders.
