The Pittsburgh Penguins saw a huge overtime goal that kept postseason hopes alive and added to NHL history.
PITTSBURGH – Not only did the Pittsburgh Penguins seal an important two points with a win over the Vancouver Canucks, but one of their elite defenders joined exclusive company. With the game-winner from Erik Karlsson, he became just one of five defensemen in NHL history to record 10 or more overtime goals.
Karlsson joined former teammate Brent Burns (16), Scott Niedermayer (13), Seth Jones (11), and fellow Penguins defenseman Kris Letang (11) as the only blue-liners to reach this feat.
The goal against the Canucks was Karlsson’s eighth on the year, and adding 35 assists to the equation, he leads Penguins defenders with 43 points. There have been some troubles, but Karlsson has been a crucial piece of the penguins’ blue line.
Karlsson’s overtime goal all started with an incredible toe save from netminder Tristan Jarry. After that save, the Penguins captured the momentum and didn’t let up until Karlsson put the nail in the coffin. The Penguins battled hard for their two points, and thanks to Karlsson’s heroics, their playoff hopes remain alive.
The Penguins sit seven points out of a playoff spot, but with multiple games in hand to gain ground. They are now riding a three-game win streak, their longest since the turn of the new year.
