PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are running it back in net in 2024. The team agreed to terms on a two-year contract with pending free-agent goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.

The contract runs through the 2025-2026 season. The contract totals $5 million and will carry an average annual value of $2.5 million.

Nedeljkovic had an impressive first season with the Penguins. Brought in to backup Tristan Jarry, he emerged as someone who could be a 1B type of goaltender. He appeared in 38 games, starting 33, for the Pens last season. He put together a record of 18-7-7 with a goals-against average of 2.97, a save percentage of .902, and one shutout.

Ned broke into the league during the 2020-2021 season with the Carolina Hurricanes. He won 15 of his first 23 starts and had a goals-against average below 2.

After impressing in Carolina, Nedeljkovic was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. He struggled in the Motor City as a full-time starter and ultimately lost his job and status in the NHL. He signed with the Penguins on a one-year deal to prove he still had the juice to be a possible starter and succeeded.

With Ned locked up, the Penguins have a strong investment in their goaltending. Jarry makes $5 million annually, meaning the team has $7.5 million locked up in the net. With prospect Joel Blomqvist almost ready to make the leap to the NHL, the Pens could have too many goalies on their roster. This newest contract could signify more changes are coming for the Penguins this offseason.
