The Pittsburgh Penguins have stated progress is being made with one of their depth forwards.
PITTSBURGH – Jansen Harkins has been out of the Pittsburgh Penguins since early March, when he suffered an upper-body injury against the Washington Capitals. The next day, the Penguins announced that Harkins had undergone successful hand surgery.
Harkins took in a solo on-ice workout ahead of the Penguins contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Head coach Mike Sullivan said following the optional morning skate that this was Harkins’ second time skating since his surgery.
It isn’t clear when/if Harkins will return to the Penguins' lineup this season. Harkins has played in 43 games without a goal. With 11 games remaining in the 2023-24 season, the Penguins are likely to see what key youngsters can do with a chance at the NHL.
The Penguins recently recalled Sam Poulin and Jonathan Gruden to hold down the fourth line, and they may stick for most of the remaining games.
In 13 games this year, Gruden has a goal and is showing an edge to his game with big hits and his first career fight.
Poulin returned to the NHL lineup for the first time in 16 months and is fighting for a regular role with the Penguins.
