The Pittsburgh Penguins are trending in the wrong direction.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are trending in the wrong direction.

The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a statement 5-2 loss at the hands of the Florida Panthers at PPG Paints Arena.

After keeping the Panthers' offense at bay through a low-event opening period and a few stagnant power play opportunities, the Penguins allowed four unanswered goals in the second period and never climbed back into the game.

The end goal for the Penguins has always been to win another championship with the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. However, they have looked far from a team ready to compete at that level this season.

Last night was an example of the caliber of team they would likely have to face in the first round, and they appeared entirely outmatched.

Squeaking into the playoffs may still be possible for this Penguins team, but anything beyond that seems far-fetched. It may be time for Kyle Dubas and company to look at selling at the trade deadline in a few weeks.
