A former star of the Pittsburgh Penguins knows how to perform in the playoffs, and he showed it again.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins know a thing or two about big playoff goals from Jake Guentzel. In Game 2 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Guentzel helped his new team, the Carolina Hurricanes, with a big individual night.
The Hurricanes didn’t get the result they were looking for, dropping the game in double overtime, but Guentzel played a big role in getting the game that far. Guentzel scored a pair of goals in the 4-3 loss.
Guentzel’s first came in the opening frame as a quick answer to the Rangers taking an early lead. Guentzel parked in front of the net for a perfect deflection and the Hurricanes first goal of the night.
With the game tied at two and the time ticking off the clock in the second period, three Rangers collapsed into the corner to defend Sebastian Aho. Guentzel found his open space and Aho didn’t miss his pass. Guentzel from one knee slipped his shot under Igor Shesterkin’s pad for his second of the game.
The Hurricanes took the lead with that goal, but the Rangers eventually emerged as winners in a second overtime. Down 2-0 in the series, the Hurricanes are heading back home for Games 3 and 4 and looking to avoid a sweep.
