The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Montreal to take on the Canadiens.
The Pittsburgh Penguins ended their recent losing streak with a victory over the Arizona Coyotes. After a much needed win, the Penguins quickly move on to face another struggling organization: the Montreal Canadiens. Here's what to watch for in this matchup.
1. Guentzel's Offense Fueling Penguins
The Penguins are getting excellent play from Jake Guentzel, and that continued in their win over the Coyotes. He posted two goals, but the first was one of the most important ones of the season for the team. He buried a feed from Sidney Crosby, giving the Pens their first power play goal in over a month.
In 27 games this season, Guentzel has already racked up 12 goals and 31 points. His even strength play is superb and he's playing like a forward about to earn a long-term contract. Facing the Canadiens, the team will need more of Guentzel's firepower to lead the way.
2. Monahan's Resurgence
Sean Monahan was once a highly touted top 10 draft pick for the Calgary Flames. After injuries and declining production tanked his time in Calgary, he's enjoying an offensive renaissance in Montreal. Through 28 games, he has eight goals and 16 points, putting him on a 47 point pace. That would be his highest offensive totals since the 2019-2020 season. With his 30 goal capability behind him, the Habs are counting on Monahan to regain his 2019 form in order to provide support to their elite young forwards.
3. Ned Gets the Nod
Penguins' starter Tristan Jarry made three straight quality starts and now the team will turn to backup Alex Nedeljkovic against the Canadiens. Jarry and Nedeljkovic have formed one of the league's best tandems through the early part of the season, with both netminders sporting .918 or higher save percentages.
Ned has made 30+ saves in all five of his appearances this year, working his way to a 2-2-1 record so far. Facing a challenging Montreal team with a team in front of him on short rest, the Pens will need another quality start from Nedeljkovic to win their second straight contest.
The Penguins and Canadiens face-off at 7:00 p.m. at the Bell Centre.
