PITTSBURGH – The 2023-24 season has been a struggle for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but they’ve never lost hope in reaching the playoffs. However, a brutal loss to the New Jersey Devils may be one of the final nails in the coffin, as the Penguins playoff odds have hit a new low.

According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins have a 2.5% chance of reaching the postseason following their loss to the Devils. That’s nearly a 10-point drop from their 11.2% chance following their win over the Detroit Red Wings.

The Devils and Red Wings are both teams the Penguins are in a heated race for the playoffs with. Thanks to their win, the Devils have improved their chances to 9.5%. The Red Wings followed their loss to the Penguins with an overtime win, pushing their percentage to 24.7%.

While no teams from the Eastern Conference have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, the Penguins hold the lowest percentage odds on Money Puck. Not counting teams with 0%, the Penguins are dead last in the Eastern race.

Despite a minus-27 goal differential, the Washington Capitals have a 56.3% chance. The New York Islanders are still in the hunt with a 17.1% chance. The Buffalo Sabres leapfrogged the Penguins, who hold a 3.7% chance.

Until the Penguins are mathematically eliminated, they won’t give up hope. With the odds shrinking and fewer games remaining to make up ground, it seems almost certain they’ll miss for their second straight postseason.
