The Pittsburgh Penguins open the second half of their season against the red-hot Winnipeg Jets.
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins return to action after the All-Star break granted them a much-needed break. They'll need to shake off the cobwebs quickly in their first game back as they welcome a challenging opponent to PPG Paints Arena. Here's what to watch for when the Penguins take on the Winnipeg Jets.
The Jake Guentzel conundrum remains the biggest question mark in Pittsburgh this season. And while his future in Pittsburgh is in doubt, he’ll accomplish a major feat when he takes the ice against Winnipeg.
Guentzel is set to play in his 500th career game in the NHL. With 463 points in 499 games, he’s been one of the most consistent scorers since he emerged during the 2016-17 season. This season, he’s continued the trend with 22 goals and 49 points through 47 games. He’ll look for his 50th point on the year in his 500th game.
The Jets are having an impressive season, sitting firmly in a playoff position. The team doesn’t overwhelm you with their skill, but they are tough to play against every shift.
That defensive mindset begins and ends with their superstar goaltender and best player, Connor Hellebuyck. The 30-year-old Vezina winner is having a marvelous season between the pipes. He’s racked up 23 wins and posted a save percentage of .924 and a goals-against average of 2.20. If the Penguins want to win their first game out of the break, they’ll have to overcome perhaps the league’s most consistent goaltender.
The Penguins will kick off the stretch run with some reinforcements to their third line. The Penguins inked former top pick Jesse Puljujarvi to a two-year deal worth $800k annually.
Puljujarvi impressed during a brief stint with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with four goals and nine points in 13 games. He’s a big-bodied, powerful forward who could be a perfect addition to Pittsburgh’s underachieving bottom six. He will look to make his season debut against the Jets.
Another milestone will be recognized during this game, as Coach Mike Sullivan will be behind the bench for his 800th game.
