Penguins Rank as Oldest Team in North American Sports

The age of the Pittsburgh Penguins takes them beyond the oldest team in hockey.

Marcus Pettersson is in the midst of a career season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Everyone knows the Pittsburgh Penguins are on average the oldest team across the NHL, but as it turns out, they’re age spans all sports.

According to an Instagram post from All Sports Culture, the Penguins are the oldest team across the four major North American sports leagues.

Their average age of 30.8 puts them above the rest as the next seven teams are from Major League Baseball.

The Penguins, Los Angeles Dodgers (30.2) and Miami Marlins (30.1) are the only three teams in North America with an average age over 30.

Among the top 20 oldest teams, seven of them are National Hockey League teams, while the other 13 are from the MLB.

All football and basketball teams fall out of the top 20.

Even if the Penguins are the oldest team in hockey for the second straight year, and among the eldest in all of sports, they likely won’t get too much younger any time soon.

The Penguins’ best players are among their oldest in guys like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang.

Even the best options behind them are beginning to age; Erik Karlsson is 33-years-old, Jake Guentzel will be 30 by the start of next season, and even Reilly Smith and Rickard Rakell are 32 and 30 respectively.

The oldest player on the Penguins roster is Jeff Carer who will be turning 39 in a few days; the youngest is defenseman John Ludvig at 23.
