PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a bad spot right now, not just in the standings, but also in the eyes on the fan base.
Penguins fans aren’t happy; the play on the ice has been unwatchable and seeing their team get clubbed by the Edmonton Oilers was the last straw.
The team has been in need of a move for over two months and Ron Hextall has done nothing but tell the media “we like our team.”
Well, the fans don’t like the team and they let Hextall know about it with not one, not two, but three ‘fire Hextall’ chants at PPG Paints Arena.
The first chant broke out before the end of the second period shortly before many in attendance departed, but for those that stayed in to the third, they fired off two more sessions.
Of course other boos and jeers were had and the personnel on the ice aren’t unaware of what happens in the stands.
“I’ve heard boos before,” Sidney Crosby said. “It’s not something that happens very often. You definitely don’t want to hear that. It was a tough night for everybody.”
Outside of the jeers towards Hextall, the crowd focused some of their anger towards Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
The two franchise leaders that have been here for almost two decades are rarely booed, but Pittsburgh fans aren’t afraid to let you know how they feel.
“They can act however they want,” Crosby said. “They paid for their ticket, and they want to see better.”
Head coach Mike Sullivan called the game as a whole a step backwards but maintained that the Penguins are still in the hunt.
As for what he thought of the crowd’s reactions? Sullivan paid it no mind.
"I didn't really pay any attention to it, quite honestly."
Just because Sullivan didn’t pay any attention doesn’t mean he didn’t notice or didn’t hear them.
Regardless, the guys in the room know of the fans feelings, they’ve heard them.
The players and coaches aren’t the ones making front office decisions, but are certainly aware of the problems that are brewing.
Can the Penguins turn it around? They believe so, even if the fans don’t.
