A former assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins has won his first career Jack Adams Award.
PITTSBURGH – Rick Tocchet has a notable history with the Pittsburgh Penguins, both as a player and part of a successful coaching staff. Since leaving the Penguins, Tocchet has started to build a successful head coaching career.
To cap off his first full season with the Vancouver Canucks, Tocchet was selected as the 2024 Jack Adams Award winner for the league’s best coach. Under the lead of Tocchet, the Canucks went from a 38-37-7 record and sixth in the Pacific Division to 50-23-9, leading the division.
Tocchet has been an instant success with the Canucks, but their search for the franchise’s first Stanley Cup will have to wait at least another year. The Canucks were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by the Edmonton Oilers.
The Canucks and Oilers went the full seven games, but the Oilers got the best in the end.
Tocchet spent three years with the Penguins and won a pair of Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. After winning his second Cup, Tocchet jumped to head coach the Arizona Coyotes for four seasons.
In parts of eight seasons as a head coach in the NHL, Tocchet has a career record of 248-235-73.
The Jack Adams Award is voted on by the NHL Broadcasters' Association.
