Sidney Crosby may be aging, but some still see the Pittsburgh Penguins captain as the best player in the world.
PITTSBURGH – No one doubts that what Sidney Crosby is doing with the Pittsburgh Penguins this year is putting him squarely in the Hart Trophy discussion as the NHL’s most valuable player. But according to a former rival, Crosby is still the best player in the world, despite being 36 in a young man’s game.
Former player-turned-analyst P.K. Subban hopped on the Pat McAfee Show and was asked about what Crosby is still bringing to the table. Subban gushed over, giving him some high praise.
“He still is, in my opinion, top to bottom, experience, leadership, you could put skill in that category,” Subban said. “He’s willing to go to the dirty areas. That’s what makes Sidney Crosby amazing… He’s still the best player in the world as far as I’m concerned.”
The argument over who could be considered the ‘best player in the world’ has been opened to quite a few names like Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon, but there is a belief from some that it is still Crosby’s title. Even after all of these years, Crosby is still putting up inside numbers and playing at new levels.
“Not to take anything away from Connor McDavid,” Subban said. “Connor McDavid is a phenomenal hockey player, a lot of it has to do with his situation and his team.”
Subban had plenty of run-ins with Crosby over the years, including a battle in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final, where Crosby carried the Penguins to their second straight championship and his second straight Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP. Subban knows the kind of competitor Crosby is firsthand and can see he’s still bringing it every night.
“This is a guy who took a Stanley Cup ring off of my finger,” Subban said. “If you’re going to lose to somebody you lose to Crosby.”
