The Pittsburgh Penguins will have some breathing room for moves this offseason.

PITTSBURGH – For the second consecutive offseason, the Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to make Quite a bit of change. After another year of missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs but a fantastic season from Sidney Crosby, the Penguins are looking to make the proper adjustments to get back into contention.

It should be a busy summer for the Penguins and Kyle Dubas entering his second year with the team. With plenty of trades and free agents to ponder, there will be plenty of salary cap flexibility to work with.

With a new season on the horizon, capfriendly.com has started to look ahead and updated their projections. According to Cap Friendly, the Penguins will have almost $13 million ($12,945,658) in cap space to work with.

If Matt Nieto spends the entire 2024-25 season on long-term injured reserve, like he is predicted to, that number goes up by another $900,000.

The Penguins are gaining a good amount of space thanks to contracts like Jeff Carter and the retained salary on Jake Guentzel coming off the books. Players on smaller deals like Jansnen Harkens and Alex Nedeljkovic have also gave the Penguins some breathing room.

Key youngsters like Sam Poulin and Valtteri Puustinen have already signed affordable deals, that will cut into the $13 million available, but there are still a few more restricted free agents to made decisions. P.O. Jospeh is due for a new contract as well as Jack St. Ivany.

The Penguins have space to work with to build a new-look squad for 2024-25, but they’ll still need to play smart. That money can fill up quickly, especially if guys like Reilly Smith and Rickard Rakell at sticking around at $5 million each.
