Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been separated on the Pittsburgh Penguins power play.
After a few too many putrid power play performances from the Pittsburgh Penguins, big changes have officially been made.
On a Thanksgiving Day practice, the Penguins hit the shuffle button on their power play units and separated key names like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Working on the first power play unit was Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Vinnie Hinostroza, Radim Zohorna.
On the second unit was Malkin, Reilly Smith, Alex Nylander, Jeff Carter, and Kris Letang.
Some of the formation may look like this due to injuries to Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, but separating Crosby and Malkin is not common for the Penguins.
Those two have been sharing a power play unit for about as long as they’ve shared a uniform.
The Penguins went 0-5 on the power play in a shutout loss to the New York Rangers where just a single goal may have made a huge difference.
With only seven power play goals on 51 attempts, the Penguins power play sits with a 13.73 success rate which is 25th in the NHL.
