The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled a young defenseman looking to make his NHL debut.
PITTSBURGH – Just a few days after general manager Kyle Dubas spoke highly of the young defenseman, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Jack St. Ivany from the American Hockey League. St. Ivany is one of only four NHL-eligible defensemen in the Penguins organization who shoots right-handed.
With Chad Ruhwedel traded to the New York Rangers, the door opened for St. Ivany to break into the Penguins’ lineup. In 52 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, St. Ivany has scored 12 total points (4G-8A).
The offensive numbers don’t jump off the page, but Dubas says St. Ivany’s strength lies within his defensive ability.
St. Ivany fills out the Penguins roster as Ryan Shea returns to the AHL. Shea was called up on an emergency basis, so the Penguins retain their limited number of recalls down the stretch. St. Ivany’s recall will likely also be on an emergency basis.
This is St. Ivany’s first recall to the NHL level after being a fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018. He’s spent the last two seasons with the Penguins organization, playing 115 games with the WBS Penguins.
