The Pittsburgh Penguins may have set a large asking price for Jake Guentzel.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins may have seen their last game with Jake Guentzel as part of their organization. Currently injured with an upper-body injury, the trade possibilities have not slowed down for Guentzel.
Multiple insiders have reported that the injury shouldn’t change the return the Penguins could get for Guentzel. According to Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the Penguins asking for Guentzel's price might be too much for teams to handle.
Kaplan has been told the Penguins are looking for a sky-high return for Guentzel.
“I've heard the asking price on Guentzel is multiple first-round picks (or a first-round pick and equivalent in top prospects or roster players),” Kaplan writes. “One rival executive said ‘the Guentzel asking price is ridiculous."’
This is similar to an earlier report that the Penguins were looking for a first-round pick, a top prospect, and an NHL-ready player in a Guentzel deal. There has been growing belief that the Penguins are likely to trade Guentzel, but if the price is too high, they might not have a choice but to keep him.
Penguins’ general manager Kyle Dubas has also allowed the team to continue fighting for the postseason. He hasn’t started selling off parts and has stated he’s allowing the veteran group to fight for every inch they can get. If the Penguins rattle off a few more wins, they’ll be sitting right up against the playoff picture with a chance of claiming a spot.
Dubas believes the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang deserve that sort of fight. Guentzel will be a massive part of a playoff run if they go for it.
The Penguins are in a tough spot with Guentzel and maybe want to keep him, but if he’s dealt, they should get a haul in return.
