Tristan Jarry has the potential of an all-star goalie, but he and a number of Pittsburgh Penguins haven't had great starts.
This past offseason, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a massive calculated risk in re-signing Tristan Jarry to be their starting goalie.
Jarry struggled with injuries the entire 2022-23 season, but has entered this year fully healthy and ready to carry the Penguins as one of the best goalies in the NHL.
The skill is there, the confidence is brewing, and Jarry genuinely has a chance to transform into an elite level talent.
Jarry’s ascension may take a moment, however, as the Penguins haven’t had an ideal start to the season going 2-3-0 in five games.
While the skaters in front of him haven’t been great, the analytical numbers haven’t leaned in Jarry’s favor either.
According to moneypuck.com, Jarry has a -1.6 goals saved above expected; that sits him 52nd out of 63 total goalies to play at least one game.
Jarry’s straight numbers also haven’t been outstanding just yet; his lone win was a shutout, but his 1-3-0 record and .892 save percentage aren’t doing any favors.
It’s still early and Jarry has all kinds of time to jump start his numbers, but the slow start has been effecting everyone.
The Penguins acquired Alex Nedeljkovic not only as a reclamation project as a backup goalie, but as a netminder who can lower the amount of games played by Jarry and keep him fresh down the line.
With a slow start from Jarry and the team as a whole, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Nedeljkovic draw in to a few extra games than expected to start the year.
The team is confident in Jarry and his abilities and he is sure to come around to his all-star potential, but it may take a few more games to really get up to speed.
