The Pittsburgh Penguins look for their first win of the season against the Washington Capitals.
The Pittsburgh Penguins started the season with a disappointing loss. Despite playing well in spurts, they couldn't put together a full, 60-minute performance against an inferior opponent. Their next challenge is against a long-standing and familiar foe, the Washington Capitals. Here's what to watch for when the Penguins and Capitals meet in the nation's capital.
1. Sid and Ovi: Year 19
Prior to the Penguins' home opener, the organization recognized their superstar trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. The core set a North American sports record for the longest-tenured trio of teammates as they returned for their 18th season together.
The only thing that's been around longer is the the rivalry between the headliners of the NHL's Salary Cap Era. Crosby and Alex Ovechkin have carried the mantle of NHL royalty for nearly 20 years, and this matchup will mark the 19th season of competition.
While the fireworks in the rivalry have died down, the two have maintained the highest level of competition. Over 65 regular season games played between the Crosby-led Pens and the Ovechkin-led Caps, Sid holds the advantage in wins and head-to-head points.
It's a season of redemption for both the Penguins and Capitals. With so much at stake, it's bound to renew the rivalry between the two teams and their two captains.
2. Eller Faces Former Team
Newly signed Penguins' center Lars Eller knows a thing or two about the Capitals' organization. Playing in Washington from 2016 to 2023, Eller racked up over 200 points as a Cap and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2018.
Now on the other side of the rivalry, Eller is trying to anchor a third line for Pittsburgh on another Stanley Cup run. His first visit back to his former team is an excellent opportunity for himself and the Penguins' third line to gain some traction in the early part of the season.
3. Karlsson Dazzles in Debut
While the Penguins looked inconsistent against the Blackhawks, one particular defenseman stood out all game. Erik Karlsson was more than advertised in his Pens debut.
Playing just over 26 minutes, Karlsson was his usual, Norris Trophy winning self all game. He controlled the pace of the game every time he touched the puck, making the right pass look effortless.
The Pens will need even more from Karlsson in their first in-division contest, and there's no doubting the elite defender will be up for the challenge.
The Penguins and Capitals face-off at 7:30PM.
