The Pittsburgh Penguins are seeing a ton of trade interest in a new name.
PITTSBURGH – With the NHL trade deadline about a week away, multiple names on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster have become popular assets on the market. Jake Guentzel and some netminders have headlined the conversations, but an unexpected face might garner the most attention.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Penguins are receiving a ton of interest in Reilly Smith.
“I’m told the Pittsburgh Penguins have received more interest and more teams interested on Smith than they have on Jake Guentzel,” Seravalli said.
Guentzel has been reported as one of the most talked about players likely to be on the move, but it’s not easy for teams to afford his price tag. Smith, meanwhile, has an extra year left on his contract and won’t cost nearly as much as Guentzel.
Smith has been linked to a pair of his former teams, the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers.
The 2023-24 season hasn’t been kind to Smith, and he’s struggled during his time with the Penguins. He’s never really warmed to the team and has only picked up 25 points in 50 games.
Reports have indicated that general manager Kyle Dubas is listening to calls on everyone outside of the core. Smith is emerging as the hottest commodity in Pittsburgh.
