After a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals have reclaimed one of their forwards.
PITTSBURGH – After a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matthew Phillips is heading back to the Washington Capitals organization. The Penguins claimed Phillips off waivers a few weeks ago from the Capitals and played just three games in Pittsburgh.
After three games played and five as a healthy scratch, the Penguins placed Phillips back on waivers. The Capitals stepped in and reclaimed their undersized forward and are free to send him to the American Hockey League Affiliate.
Phillips did not record a single point in three games with the Penguins but was briefly a presence on the second line with Evgeni Malkin.
In his previous 27 games with the Capitals, Phillips scored a goal and four assists with the Capitals before his initial stint on waivers.
Phillips has had a successful career in the American Hockey League with over 100 goals in parts of six seasons. Each of Phillips' AHL games came with the Calgary Flames' AHL affiliates the Stockton Heat and Calgary Wranglers.
