The IIHF Men's World Championship kicked off Friday in Stockholm, Sweden, and Team Canada played its first tournament matchup on Saturday.

And they came out of it victorious.

Team Canada shut out Team Slovenia, 4-0, with a lot of help from one of the prominent Nova Scotians on the team.

And, no, it wasn't Pittsburgh Penguins' and Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby this time. It was Colorado Avalanche star and Crosby's good friend, Nathan MacKinnon, who registered a goal and three points.

The scoring kicked off just more than seven minutes into the first period, when Bo Horvat - assisted by MacKinnon and Travis Konecny - capitalized on the power play to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 until Canada erupted for three goals in the second period.

MacKinnon kicked off the second-period scoring with a goal off the rush a few minutes into the middle frame. Midway through the period, Canada was on the power play yet again, and Horvat put home a rocket from the left circle off a feed from MacKinnon to make it 3-0.

Then, to cap off the scoring, Noah Dobson tallied a goal just a few minutes later off a feed from youngster Macklin Celebrini on an odd-man rush.

Crosby, although on the top power play unit and on a line with Celebrini, did not register a point.

Up next for Team Canada is a matchup against Latvia on Sunday afternoon.
