One of the best goal scorers on the Pittsburgh Penguins is having a 'down' year while just under a point-per-game.

PITTSBURGH - Over the last couple of seasons, Jake Guentzel has grown into one of the best players on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster.

Heading into the season, it wasn’t a far out wager to bet that Guetnzel would lead the Penguins in goal scoring for 2022-23.

Through his first 52 games of the season, Guentzel is second on the team with 24 goals, just one behind Sidney Crosby who has 25.

Guentzel has also tallied 27 assists for 51 points in 52 games all alongside Crosby on the first line.

That’s 51 points for on the year for Guentzel, yet, he considered to be having a ‘down year.’

Maybe that shows just how high the expectations were; plenty of players would love a season like that, but Pittsburgh expects more from their future leader.

Guentzel is held to a higher standard, however, and he has noticed this season hasn’t been his best.

“It’s been not too good, not too great,” Guentzel said. “Fluctuating a little bit. I feel like I get a lot more chances than I make.”

2022-23 hasn’t been Guentzel’s best season and is technically a set back from last year where he put up 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 points in just 76 games.

Early predictions for Guentzel were him possibly hitting 50 goals and 100 points; while that ship has likely sailed, he is still capable of helping the Penguins win.

“I just got to stick with it, make sure I’m playing the best I can.”

Guetnzel might not be having a great year to his standards, but he still helps the team win and is one of the best goal scorers on the Penguins.
