The PGA golfer said he's a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins and had a night he won't forget.
The offseason came early for Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins this year, but that timing may have opened the door for a fun story between them and 13th ranked golfer in the world, Justin Thomas.
According to Thomas on the first episode of the Smylie Show Podcast, he and some friends ran into Crosby and multiple Penguins at a restaurant where both groups were on vacation.
The story goes that the two groups had a competition of one-upmanship at the restaurant before playing some party games into the night.
Thomas says that he is a huge hockey fan, and more in particular a fan of the Penguins so he was able to recognize Crosby fairly easily.
After a brief interaction between Thomas and the Penguins, Thomas told his group that they had a wild night ahead of them.
Thomas’ group included other pro golfers Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.
Before the night kicked off, while everyone was still finishing up their meals, Crosby and the Penguins sent a bottle of wine over to Thomas’ table.
A kind gesture from the future Hall of Famer, but Thomas and his table knew they had to do something back.
The group decided to send back a caesar salad with just a single piece of lettuce on the plate, thus starting a playful battle.
In response to the small salad, the Penguins sent the golfers table with a tray of what looked tequila shots.
Before anyone took the shot, however, they noticed that the liquid was quite warm; someone at the table finally said the glasses were just full of warm salt water.
The golfers’ response was to send the Penguins shots of their own, but made it shots of 2% milk.
Following the excursion, Thomas did offer to pay for the Penguins dinners, but the team declined stating ‘we know you just missed the cut at the Masters, so you probably shouldn’t pay for this.’
The party then moved to the Penguins rented space where a game of flip cup eventually took place.
One of the games pinned Smylie Kaufman against Crosby on the final cup.
According to the story, Kaufman’s team was crushing Crosby’s; as it came to Kaufman, he didn’t immediately take his turn to win handily, rather waited for Crosby to get his opportunity.
Kaufman put the pressure on one of the most competitive people in Penguins’ history.
After staring Crosby down waiting for his team to catch up, Kaufman took his drink and nailed the flip on the first try.
Kaufman said that was the peak of his life.
Through the story telling, it was found out that Jake Guentzel was also a part of the festivities.
