The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired former two-time Stanley Cup champion, Nick Bonino.

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired former two-time Stanley Cup champion, Nick Bonino.

The Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t done making moves just yet, as they made an early morning deal to acquire Nick Bonino. The two-time Stanley Cup champion will be reuniting with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang for another run with the Penguins.

The deal was first reported by Elliotte Friedman, still no official announcement from the Penguins or updates on what is being sent to the San Jose Sharks.

Bonino is still putting up solid numbers as a bottom six player. He has 10 goals and nine assists on the season and provides an instant upgrade to the fourth line.

Bonino played two seasons previously with the Penguins. During his first stint, he centered the famous “HBK” line with Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin. The trio was a huge part of the Penguins’ back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017, with Bonino scoring a series clinching goal against the Washington Capitals in ‘16.

The 34-year-old center is playing on a one year, $2.1 million dollar deal, and will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The move appears to be mostly a rental, but it should help to fortify the bottom six depth of the Penguins. Bonino’s presence should also help to fill the defensive and penalty killing void left by Teddy Blueger.

This move kicks off deadline day for the Penguins; we'll have to wait and see if Ron Hextall has any other moves up his sleeve.

UPDATE: The Penguins have made the deal official.

The Penguins are acquiring Bonino from the Sharks in a tree-team deal including the Montreal Canadiens who will retain 50% of Bonino's remaining salary.

The Sharks are acquiring defenseman Arvid Henriksson, a 2024 fifth-round pick, and 2023 seventh-round pick.

The Canadiens are receiving defenseman Tony Sund and San Jose's 2024 fifth round pick.
