The Pittsburgh Penguins on Team USA continue to be difference makers at the IIHF World Championship.
Team USA has looked pretty dominant at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, and a large part of that has been due to the work of players from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Drew O’Connor and Nick Bonino have had stellar tournaments, but it’s Penguins’ goalie Casey DeSmith who continues to prove his worth.
DeSmith posted a shutout against Denmark to push the United States to a perfect 5-0 as the preliminary round starts to wind down.
Team USA and Denmark rode into the third period without a goal between them.
DeSmith held the fort through the final frame while the Team USA skaters in front of him put up a three-goal third period.
The victory marked DeSmith’s third appearance and the team’s first shutout of the tournament stopping all 22 shots he faced.
This win came on the first half of a back-to-back for Team USA; following their next match against France, Team USA will appear in the final game of the preliminary round.
Team USA currently leads the tournament with 15 standings points.
