It’s still blatantly obvious the Pittsburgh Penguins have a number of problems piling up and all eyes are on general manager Ron Hextall to figure some things out.
Despite the issues, there has been a few bright spots surrounding the Penguins; the first is their core.
Hextall did a great job in bringing back Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang to finish out their careers in Pittsburgh.
All three of Malkin, Letang, and Sidney Crosby have having solid years and are doing everything they can to help the team win.
Another group doing everything they can to help the Penguins win are the men behind the bench.
Mike Sullivan and his coaching staff have been doing all they can with the group they are being given.
For those that believe a few faces on the staff should be fired need to be aware that that’s not going to happen.
Whether the fans like that or not, pretty much every coach and assistant signed a contract extension over the offseason.
Sullivan’s doesn’t even start until after the 2023-24 season, so you know he’s not going anywhere.
Todd Reirden and Ty Hennes were both given promotions in the last year, as well; Reirden’s official title is now associate coach and Hennes was bumped to assistant.
Along with the promotion to associate coach, Reirden also signed a two-year extension just days before Mike Vellucci signed a similar contract.
With new contracts in place for just about everyone on the coaching staff it’s safe to say none of them are on the move yet.
Sullivan stated before the beginning of the bye week that he needs to be a better coach for the Penguins, but the front office like what they’ve seen.
Brian Burke said that Sullivan and the entire coaching staff are doing a great job with the team.
The contracts and promotions should be all fans need to see that whether you like it or not, that group isn’t on the hot seat at all.
