The Pittsburgh Penguins have started making cuts to form their roster for the 2023-24 season.
After the first weekend of training camp and opening pair of preseason games, the Pittsburgh Penguins have begun making cuts to their roster.
The Penguins entered the 2023 training camp with 58 players, many of which looking for roles on the NHL roster.
Ahead of the second preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings, the Penguins have trimmed their camp roster down to 47 names.
The group of cuts mostly consisted players either being moved to the AHL roster or back to their junior team.
Forward Justin Abbandonato was also released from his professional tryout agreement and defenseman Mark Pysyk was added to the injured list.
Matt Filipe, Dillon Hamaliuk, Sam Houde, Jagger Joshua, Evan Vierling, and Taylor Gauthier were assigned to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
Andre Anania (Sudbury Wolves), Matthew Soto (Kingston Frontenacs), and Michael Simpson (Peterbrough Petes) were all sent to their junior team, all in the Ontario Hockey League.
Among those still on the Penguins roster and fighting for NHL jobs are PTOs Colin White, Libor Hajek, and Austin Wagner.
Vinnie Hinostroza, Andreas Johnsson, and Rem Pitlick are new to the Penguins organization and still have a chance to crack the NHL roster.
Prospects Brayden Yager, Isaac Belliveau, and Joel Blomqvist are also still with the big club at camp.
Overall, there is nothing surprising about the first round of cuts from the roster.
