The IIHF World Championship will have some Pittsburgh Penguins representation.
The season ended prematurely for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but that doesn’t mean all of the players are finished playing for the year.
Penguins’ forward Jake Guentzel stated that he plans on representing Team USA in the IIHF World Championships.
Every year, as teams across the NHL end their seasons, a number of players jump to the international stage and take part in one of the biggest events in the IIHF calendar.
The 2023 World Championship is set to start on May 12 and take place in both Finland and Latvia.
Guentzel is a native of Omaha, NE and has never played at this kind of international setting.
Had NHL players gone to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Guentzel would have been a shoe-in to make team USA.
In 78 games this season, Guentzel led the team in goals with 36 along with 37 assists for 73 points.
Guentzel said on multiple occasions that he wasn’t having a great season, but those certainly aren’t bad numbers.
The standards are high for Guentzel, and he didn’t produce as expected, but was still a solid contributor.
