Kris Letang will go down as one of the greatest Pittsburgh Penguins of all-time, and this is another milestone for his resume.
PITTSBURGH When the puck drops between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, it will mark Kris Letang’s 1,000th game in the NHL.
Letang is closing in on history as not only another player to reach the coveted milestone, but the third player in Penguins’ history to hit the mark completely with the Penguins.
Sidney Crosby hit the mark during the 2020-21 season and Evgeni Malkin surpassed the number earlier this season.
When Letang next takes the ice, he will help the Penguins become the second team in NHL history to have three players reach 1,000 games with the same team.
Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings were the first.
Through his first 999 games, Letang has recorded 154 goals and 532 assists for 686 points, but might arguably be most known for his endurance.
Over Letang’s career, he has averaged almost 25 minutes of ice time per-game, and is usually the Penguins leader in that category every night.
Letang is not only the third Penguins player to ever hit the 1,000 games mark, but he will also be the first defenseman in franchise history to do it.
It wasn’t an easy ride for Letang either; over his 17-year career, he has suffered numerous injuries and been diagnosed with two strokes.
Letang has never won a Norris Trophy for NHL’s top defensemen, but has been in the mix on multiple occasions and has been invited to multiple All-Star Games.
It goes without saying at this point that Letang is the greatest Penguins defenseman off all-time and this is just another night to cement his well chronicled legacy.
