PITTSBURGH - The odds have slimmed exponentially, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are not yet eliminated from playoff contention.

The Penguins couldn’t hold off one of the worst teams in the Western Conference and are likely going to miss the postseason for the first time since 2006.

It was the Chicago Blackhawks who played spoiler, but there is still one lifeline remaining, and it’s another long shot.

While the Florida Panthers punched their ticket to the postseason, the Penguins are relying on the work of the Montreal Canadiens.

The New York Islanders host the Canadiens tomorrow on Long Island and if the Penguins want to stay in the hunt, they’ll need the Habs not just win, but win in regulation.

A single point from the Islanders in their final regular season game will seal the deal for them and send them to the playoffs.

Even if the Canadiens pull up the major upset, that doesn’t yet slot the Penguins into the playoffs; it’ll then be up to Pittsburgh to win their last game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Things seem bleak and the team feels deflated, but the Penguins chances are not yet at zero.
