The ownership group of the Pittsburgh Penguins looks to be taking another step in the regional sports broadcast business.
As the landscape of regional sports broadcasting continues to change, the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ partnership with AT&T SportsNet seemed unsure.
The Penguins’ ownership, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), may be stepping in and finding a solution.
According to the Sports Business Journal, FSG is striking a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to buy the AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh channel.
Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that they plan on selling all of their regional sports networks, and FSG looks to be stepping up for the Pittsburgh brach.
While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, it looks as if everything will be settled by the time puck drops on the 2023-24 season.
FSG has always seemed like the likely buyer of AT&T thanks to their successful venture into regional sports broadcasting.
New England Sports Network (NESN) is the primary broadcaster of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox and is 80% owned by FSG.
While the Penguins will land with FSG, AT&T SportsNet’s other team may have a decision to make.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will be able to cut a deal with FSG or give their television rights to Major League Baseball to handle production.
More details of the sale, name change, and possible on-screen changes, will likely be made known at a later date.
