The Pittsburgh Penguins will keep Ty Smith around for another season.
A lot of people will consider Ty Smith the Pittsburgh Penguins’ most NHL-ready prospect; but with over 120 games played at the NHL level, is he really still a prospect?
Regardless of how you label Smith, the Penguins have re-signed him to a one-year contract that will earn him $775,000.
The 23-year-old spent nine games in the NHL during 2022-23 and looked to be ready for a much more regular role.
In those nine games, Smith recorded a goal and three assists and was forced to play top power play minutes when Kris Letang was out of the lineup.
Smith has played 123 career games in the NHL and has shown to be a solid puck mover with 39 career assists in his first three seasons.
In 39 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Smith scored seven goals and 17 assists for 24 total points.
Regardless of how the Penguins lineup and defensive group shake out, Smith is ready for a regular spot.
Following the Smith signing, Drew O'Connor is the lone Penguins restricted free agent (not including those that jumped to Europe) left to sign a new contract.
