The second buyout window has opened for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The second buyout window has opened for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Of all the players on the roster, it’s possible Drew O’Connor brings the biggest change to the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason.

O’Connor’s filing for arbitration opened up a second buyout window for the Penguins that may play a huge role in Kyle Dubas’ decision making in the early parts of August.

That second window opens today and will remain open for 48 hours.

If Dubas and the Penguins decide to take advantage of this window, they could be saving over $4 million against the salary cap this upcoming season.

Mikael Granlund has become a popular buyout candidate in Pittsburgh, and for good reason.

In his first 21-game stint with the Penguins, he recorded a single garbage time goal and four assists; a performance far below his contract.

As of right now, Granlund is slated to make $5 milion for another two seasons; a buyout right now would push his cap hit all the way down to just $833,333.

It will rise by $1 million for the following three years, but that might still be worth the cost, especially if Dubas can parlay the cap room into something bigger and better.

Erik Karlsson has been on the Penguins’ radar all summer, and things could be coming to a head during this 48-hour period.

What was supposed to just be a casual, slow news weekend for the Penguins, could be one of the most important couple of days in recent memory.
