Trade talks across the NHL have been picking up and multiple deals have been made; so what’s going on with the Pittsburgh Penguins?
According to David Pagnotta, the Penguins have been having ‘serious discussions’ with the Vancouver Canucks.
Pagnotta says that the center of the conversations was not J.T. Miller, but Brock Boeser.
A lot of speculation has been surrounding Miller this week, but that’s a player the Penguins need to avoid thanks to a new contract that kicks in next season.
Miller’s new contract lasts seven seasons and is worth $8 million against the cap each year.
As for Boeser, that’s a much more affordable contract at $6.65 million for this year and two more after.
Part of what general manager Ron Hextall is looking for is someone with term; he doesn’t want to give up key assets for a rental.
Pagnotta also made sure to state that if the Canucks move Boeser, salary will be retained.
Boeser has long been rumored to be dealt by the Canucks and the Penguins have always made sense.
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are future Hall of Fame centers that can pull more skill out of Boeser than he already shows.
In 376 career games, Boeser has scored 132 goals and 162 assists for 294 points.
At only 26-years-old, Boeser has a lot of career left in him and the Penguins can likely get even more out of the player than the Canucks ever could.
