One of the Pittsburgh Penguins biggest problems from the 2022-23 season might still be around for another year.
Based on projections of current lineups, the Penguins are still the oldest team in the NHL with an average age of 31.1, and the margin is getting wider.
The Washington Capitals are listed as the second oldest at 29.6, but they’ve at least trended younger than last summer’s projections.
While the Capitals went from 29.7 to 29.6, the Penguins saw an increase from 30.0 to their current 31.1.
There is still some time to sort out the age range in Pittsburgh, but it seems pretty likely they’ll enter their second straight season as the oldest team in the NHL.
Free agents aren’t typically younger and no team wants to trade their young assets; for the Penguins it’ll be a matter of putting their younger talent on the ice.
Drew O’Connor, Alex Nylander, and maybe Sam Poulin have a chance at lowering the average age, but it wouldn’t be by much.
Everyone got a year older since last offseason and that includes the Penguins; it’s not an easy task to shrink the average age, especially when your best players have exceeded the age of 35 in a ‘young man’s sport.’
