The trade deadline continues to close in and the Pittsburgh Penguins are still in the hunt for one of the top players remaining on the block.
The Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves in a couple of trade rumors in the past 24 hours and as the NHL trade deadline inches closer, they’re still very involved.
It was reported by David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period that the Penguins were one of the teams still in the conversation to land defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Arizona Coyotes.
Rob Rossi of the Athletic backed that statement on the Tip of the Ice-Burgh Podcast saying Ron Hextall has re-engaged in talks with the Coyotes.
According to Rossi, the Penguins have not only re-engaged, but might be in on a multiple player deal with the Coyotes.
Rossi states that Chychrun would be the centerpiece along with an unnamed forward from Arizona.
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has been in favor of Chychrun for some time, even more so than Hextall.
It’s fairly clear that Hextall doesn’t want to part ways with certain assets and the asking price for Chychrun has been rumored to be around a pair of first round picks.
Rossi believes that there are multiple teams outside of Pittsburgh that are still in on Chychrun, but have the assets the Coyotes are looking for and are willing to give them away.
The Penguins could use a guy like Chychrun on their blue line; he would immediately fill in on the top pairing with Kris Letang and could stick around for a few more seasons.
Hextall re-signed Letang to a six-year contract extension over the summer, and Chychrun is a player that can get the most out of Letang in the final years of his career.
