Another Pittsburgh Penguins legend will be remembered forever at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Had it not been for Tom Barrasso, the Pittsburgh Penguins would not have been back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions in 1991 and 1992.
Sure, they had all-time greats like Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, but Barrasso was just as important to the Penguins success.
After retiring in 2003, Barrasso is finally getting the recognition he deserves and will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2023.
Barrasso broke into the league in 1983 as an 18-year-old rookie with the Buffalo Sabres where he made an immediate mark on the league.
In 42 games played in his rookie season, Barrasso picked up a 26-12-3 record with a .893 save percentage and 2.85 goals against average.
With a pair of shutouts, Barrasso ended his rookie season as the NHL’s Calder Trophy winner as rookie of the year, and won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie.
During the 1988 season, the Penguins traded former first round pick Doug Bodger and Darrin Shannon for Barrasso.
With the Penguins, Barrasso would play 460 games over 12 years and set the standard for goaltending in Pittsburgh at the time.
Barrasso finished his Penguins’ tenure with a franchise record 226 wins and 22 shutouts.
Through his 19-year NHL career, Barrasso picked notched a 369-277-86 record with a .892 SV% and 38 shutouts.
His 369 wins ranks fourth all-time among American-born goalies in NHL history.
Barrasso is part of a goalie-heavy Hall of Fame class; also being inducted in 2023 are goalies Henrik Lundqvist and Mike Vernon along with players Pierre Turgeon, Caroline Ouellette, and builders Pierre Lacroix, and Ken Hitchcock.
