Ty Smith spent most of his first year with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the AHL but is a finalist for Man of the Year.
In his first season with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, Ty Smith has been given the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year award.
The Penguins defenseman was named to this award for his outstanding contributions to the community during the season.
Being named to such an award also makes Smith one of 32 finalists for 2022-23 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the AHL’s Man of the Year.
During his first season with the Penguins organization, Smith had an immediate impact with the community.
Smith was often at the Junior Pens Learn-to-Skate program, helping teach kids how to skate and play hockey in the northeast region of Pennsylvania.
In 39 games at the AHL level, Smith scored seven goals and recorded 17 assists for 24 points.
Smith missed a large chunk of the final games of the season due to a facial fracture.
The Penguins recalled Smith to the NHL once during the 2022-23 season and he was an impressive piece in nine games.
Smith scored a goal and three assists for four points.
The AHL will name a winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award on May 5.
