Erik Karlsson is still a target, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for a lower price.
With every passing day, teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to wait for the San Jose Sharks to make a final decision on Erik Karlsson.
The Penguins have been heavily involved in trade rumors with Karlsson for over a month, but there still hasn’t been a resolve.
The Sharks may be to blame for no solution, as they continue to ask for a massive return for Karlsson, and teams aren’t willing to pay.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the team that are still involved in the process, like the Penguins are sitting back and waiting on the Sharks to drop the price.
Karlsson is a three-time Norris Trophy Winning defenseman and the Sharks are smart in looking for a haul, but they can’t dig their heels into their asking price.
He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that, but $11.5 million is a lot to pay for someone who has a significant injury history and can be a liability defensively.
No matter where Karlsson lands, it’ll be a risk for that team; it might be an easy risk to take as he immediately adds star power to the blue line, but a similar level of production from 2022-23 isn’t guaranteed.
The Penguins are smart to continue waiting out the process, especially if the Sharks refuse to lower the cost.
Early reports indicated that Marcus Pettersson might be part of the return to San Jose; it's believed that Kyle Dubas has taken Pettersson of the table.
One of P.O. Joseph or Ty Smith might have to be involved along with Jeff Petry, but the Penguins likely won't send both young blue liners.
The Penguins want Karlsson, but don't want to lose too many valuable assets.
Seravalli believes talks will pick back up in August when the Sharks have had time to think about their decisions.
