Penguins Playoff Hopes Slipping as Odds Continue to Shrink

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a point out of the wild card and for the first time, without games in hand.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are desperate for someone to break through in their bottom six. Who could be the catalyst that sparks that part of the lineup?

Every day from now until the end of the season it seems like the odds of the Pittsburgh Penguins making the postseason are going to take major swings.

The Penguins loss to the New Jersey Devils paired with a Florida Panthers win further sunk their chances.

As the playoff field continues to take shape, the Eastern Conference wild card spots are still a jump ball and a battle between three teams.

The Penguins, however, sit with the furthest odds at 41.6% to make the playoffs according to moneypuck.com.

It’s been an excruciatingly tough run for the Penguins as they haven’t been able to string together more than one win in a row since mid-March.

They’ve been lucky enough to not lose multiple consecutive games since late-March, but they’re not doing themselves any favors.

At the peak of their playoff chances, the Penguins had as many as four games in hand on the New York Islanders.

But, games in hand don’t mean anything if you don’t win them; and the Penguins failed to do that.

All of the Penguins, Panthers, and Islanders have played 78 games and it’s the Penguins who sit one point out of the wild card race.

The Panthers and Islanders have 87 points on the season and subsequently have the highest postseason odds.

Money Puck states that the Panthers and Islanders have nearly identical percentages; the Panthers with 78.4%, the Islanders with 78.5%.

The Penguins are the longshots at this point, and that’s not ideal given the inability of numerous players.

They still have a chance, but it continues to get slimmer as the games count down.
