The general manager position in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is still open, but there is no rush to fill it.
Following a depressing end to the 2022-23 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins began their offseason with a massive search for their next general manager.
After around a month and a half of searching, the Penguins landed on Kyle Dubas, but not as general manager.
Dubas joined the team and given the official title of president of hockey operations, technically leaving the general manager role open.
When asked about the specifications of his job, Dubas said he would take over as general manager and handle those duties on an interim basis.
Dubas went as far to say that he may start looking into general manager candidates in July.
We have entered August and no word has been spoken about a possible GM search.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that either; Dubas has experience working as a GM, but he’s also been fairly busy with other priorities.
Dubas was hired by the Penguins on June 1, not long after arriving in Pittsburgh, he had to begin preparations for the 2023 Draft.
In the meantime, Dubas hired a few extra faces around the front office, including Jason Spezza as assistant general manager.
Dubas has also been traveling to meet with various players from the Penguins roster to discuss their futures with the team.
Tristan Jarry and his wife got a visit from Dubas at their home in Edmonton, and Dubas met with Jeff Petry in Detroit.
Dubas has also been working the phone lines looking to improve the lineup; Reilly Smith was added for a future draft pick and the Penguins have been in on reigning Norris Trophy winning defenseman Erik Karlsson since at least the draft.
The Penguins don’t necessarily need a general manager right now, and Dubas has done a solid job in improving the organization both on and off the ice.
