Things aren't perfect, but the Pittsburgh Penguins have one of the best records over 10 games across the league.
PITTSBURGH - Don’t look now, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and have only lost one time in regulation since that brutal loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
The Penguins followed that blowout defeat from the Oilers with one of their best runs of the season and it’s coming at the right time.
Their 7-2-1 record for 15 points is good to give them a tie for the third best stretch in the league.
‘Fire Hextall’ chants rang out at PPG Paints Arena on multiple occasions and the star players were booed.
The players in the locker room never lost hope, and they knew the Penguins had something big coming.
General manager Ron Hextall didn’t do much of significance at the trade deadline, but the Penguins have stepped their game up to a new level.
While the core hums right along, they’ve gotten phenomenal help from a resurgence in Jake Guentzel and the unstoppable Jason Zucker.
Guentzel said before he wasn’t having his best season, yet just scoring at just under a point per game pace; he’s recorded seven points (3G-4A) in his last eight games and is finding his rhythm.
The tale of Zucker’s 2022-23 season will be told for ages; after scoring a combined 35 points over the last two season, Zucker has bounced back with a 42-point season through 62 games.
Zucker has been a goal scoring machine since mid-February, scoring 11 goals in 13 games.
No assists over that span, but you can tell Zucker has been a spark plug for the Penguins who desperately needed a jump.
Sidney Crosby was recently named one of the NHL’s three Stars of the Week for recording seven points (2G-5A) in four games.
Some might still have their worries with Tristan Jarry in net, but he’s slowly gaining a rhythm.
The Penguins don’t have a ton of runway to work with, but they have a great chance to make the postseason and are getting hot at the right time.
Quite a few important games remain, and the Penguins aren’t out of the woods, but they are trending in the right direction.
